From having prenatal check-ups and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.sg\/blog\/types-of-childbirth-and-delivery-method-facts-you-should-know\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choosing the delivery method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to figuring out Singapore parental leave laws and getting health insurance for your newborn child, there are heaps of things to prepare for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, Singapore is a city that protects basic employment rights. All employers are legally obligated to provide maternity and paternity leave so that new parents can spend quality time bonding with their infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this feature from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.sg\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pacific Prime CXA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we are going to highlight the various maternity and paternity leave schemes in Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class='code-block code-block-11' style='margin: 8px 0; clear: both;'>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.sg\/compare-quotes\/step-one\/?campSource=PPSG-Blog&utm_source=blog&utm_medium=content_banner&utm_campaign=banner&utm_content=single\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pacificprime.sg\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Banner-v3.jpg\" alt=\"get a quote\" width=\"1138\" height=\"493\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aternity <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eave in Singapore<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant female employees are currently entitled to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mom.gov.sg\/employment-practices\/leave\/maternity-leave\/eligibility-and-entitlement\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 or 16 weeks of maternity leave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also important to note that if you are expecting twins or more at one time, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this still counts as a single birth in terms of maternity leave in Singapore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and mothers won\u2019t receive double maternity leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The factors that determine the length of your maternity leave are whether:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your child is a Singapore citizen;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are legally married to the child\u2019s father (only applicable for children born or have an estimated due date (EDD) before January 1st, 2017); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have worked for your employer or been self-employed for at least 90 days before your child&#8217;s birth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out how long your maternity leave will be, you can easily use the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mom.gov.sg\/employment-practices\/leave\/maternity-leave\/eligibility-and-entitlement\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maternity leave tool on the Ministry of Manpower\u2019s (MOM) website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML) <\/strong><strong>S<\/strong><strong>cheme<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your child a Singapore citizen and you\u2019ve worked for your employer for at least three continuous months? If so, then you are entitled to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave, which can be taken up to four weeks before giving birth and 12 weeks post-birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last eight weeks of maternity leave are more flexible and can be worked out between employer and employee to come up with a mutually acceptable plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to have given your employer at least 1 week\u2019s notice before going on maternity leave, and inform them as soon as possible of your delivery. Otherwise, you are only entitled to half the payment during maternity leave, unless you have a good enough reason for not giving the notice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the employer and the government will be involved in paying employee\u2019s salary on maternity leave. The employer will pay the first eight weeks, while the employer can claim reimbursement for salary payments from the government for the last eight weeks of maternity leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, for the third or subsequent birth, employers can claim the full 16 weeks from the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been self-employed for at least <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three continuous months<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the baby\u2019s arrival, you can enjoy 16 weeks of maternity leave as long as you can prove that you have lost income during the maternity leave period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who are self-employed, the net trade income, over the 12 months before the birth of her child, will be used to calculate the government reimbursement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Mothers who don\u2019t qualify under the GMPL because of short-term employment contracts or expired employment contracts (this also includes self-employed mothers) can be covered by the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.profamilyleave.msf.gov.sg\/schemes\/maternity-benefit\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government Paid Maternity Benefit (GPMB) scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The GPMB will cover expecting mothers who have been employed for at least 90 days within the 12 months preceding their child\u2019s birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Employment Act (EA) <\/strong><strong>S<\/strong><strong>cheme<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve worked for your employer for at least <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three continuous months<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the birth of your child &#8211; but your child isn\u2019t a Singapore citizen, you are entitled to 12 weeks of leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One special exception is if your child becomes a Singapore citizen within 12 months of their birth, then you\u2019ll be able to take any remaining maternity leave, including the GPML.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the GPML scheme, the government does not reimburse employers for salaries paid under the EA scheme. Employers are obliged to fund the first eight weeks of maternity leave, and the last four weeks may count as unpaid leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether the employer will pay for the last four weeks depends on the terms of the employment contract between employer and employee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who are self-employed, unfortunately, won\u2019t qualify for maternity leave under the EA scheme. Managers or executives who earn over SGD $4.5K a month in basic salary, seafarers, domestic workers, or civil servants\/statutory board employees also won\u2019t qualify for maternity leave under the EA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mothers who don\u2019t qualify for the EA scheme (for whatever reason) may be covered under the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sso.agc.gov.sg\/Act\/CDCSA2001\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child Development Co-savings Act (CDCA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The act encourages married persons in Singapore to have more children and to make financial provisions for the development of children, amongst others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current Paid Paternity Leave in Singapore<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All working dads, citizens, PRs, and foreigners are eligible for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mom.gov.sg\/employment-practices\/leave\/paternity-leave\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two weeks of paid paternity leave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as long as they meet the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The baby is a Singapore citizen;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father has been married to a Singapore citizen between conception and birth; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father has worked for his employer for a continuous period of at least 90 days before the birth of the child. Alternatively, he has been self-employed for a continuous period of at least 90 days before the birth of the child, and has lost income during the paternity leave period.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GPPL can be taken continuously as a 2-week block within 16 weeks of your child\u2019s birth. Alternatively, you can also take yours over the course of 12 months from the birth of your child. Government reimbursement is capped at SGD <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$2.5K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per week, inclusive of CPF contributions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your child must meet all the above criteria mentioned above to be eligible for government-paid paternity leave. Remember to declare your eligibility to your employer before you apply for GPPL through your company\u2019s usual leave-taking procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child is not a Singapore citizen, you may check with your employer to see whether they can provide company-paid paternity leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shared Parental Leave in Singapore<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working fathers, including self-employed ones, are entitled to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mom.gov.sg\/employment-practices\/leave\/shared-parental-leave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">share up to four weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of his wife\u2019s 16-week maternity leave (with her consent, of course) under the following conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The baby is a Singapore citizen;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The child\u2019s mother qualifies for Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML); and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man has been lawfully married to the child\u2019s mother.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to give your employer at least one week\u2019s notice beforehand, no matter what kind of parental leave in Singapore you apply for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For mothers-to-be, inform your employer as soon as possible of your delivery.
