What is cybercrime?

To report cybercrime, you must first understand what they are, and learn how to spot them. When you think of cybercrimes, the first thing that comes to mind is most likely a hacker. You are not far from the mark at all. In fact, almost all cybercrimes are committed by a hacker or cybercriminal. They can also be carried out by an organization of hackers. What’s more, these criminals tend to be motivated by money. Usually, corporate data, trade secrets, and critical infrastructure are stolen or damaged as a result.

What are the different types of cybercrime?

There are two main categories of cybercrime. The first category involves a criminal activity that targets computers, while the second uses them to commit other crimes. Viruses are an example of a crime in the first category. On the flip side, using computers to spread malware to damage other devices is an example of the latter.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of the different types of cybercrime:

  • Phishing, such as sending fake emails to get personal information.
  • Identity theft involves the misuse of your personal information.
  • Theft of financial or card payment data.
  • Theft and sale of corporate data.
  • Hacking, or the shutting down or misusing of websites or computer networks.
  • Cyber extortion, or demanding money to prevent a threatened attack.
  • Cyber espionage (where hackers access government or company data).

It’s important to note that all digital devices with connection to the internet are susceptible to cyber threats. To put it simply, your computer isn’t the only thing you have to worry about.

What is SingCERT?

In Singapore, SingCERT is a cybersecurity organization you could call in response to cybercrime. CERT stands for Computer Emergency Response Team. This first responder to cybersecurity incidents has branches all over the world. On top of that, its work involves providing advice on the best practices in computer security. However, note that SingCERT is not responsible for cybercrime investigations. Generally, all cybercrime investigations here are carried out by the Singapore Police Force.

What can SingCERT do for you?

Once you contact them, SingCERT will examine the nature of the cyber incident. Next, they will advise all affected users on ways to remedy the situation. If needed, they’ll share important information with businesses and the general public. This is to prevent more people from falling victim to similar incidents in the future.

Keep in mind that cyber threats are borderless. That’s why SingCERT works closely with other CERTS to train and to advise on critical cybersecurity incidents.
